The interview is still a part the admission process of many colleges and universities.

Partly for evaluation but mostly for personal contact and as a resource for students. The interview most likely won't make or break your chances (unless you are obnoxious or rude or something ridiculous like that), but admissions officers do factor it in, along with all your other credentials, when deciding whether or not you'll get the fat envelope.
At some colleges, the most junior members of the admissions staff handle all interviews, but it's still to your advantage to take it seriously.
